Jóhannes Smári Þórarinsson
Jóhannes Þórarinsson is a civil engineer who has been associated with Refskegg Ltd. and its core personnel for more than a decade.
On behalf of Refskegg, Jóhannes has served as a site engineer and, in part, as a project manager on projects focused on establishing data centers in Iceland. Previously, as an independent subcontractor, Jóhannes worked for Lota Ltd. and, earlier, for Mannvit Ltd. During this time, he contributed to various projects at multiple levels, with a primary focus on scheduling during the early phases and later serving as a site/owner’s engineer. These projects ranged from constructing new buildings to developing new hydropower plants.
As a former employee of Mannvit Ltd., Jóhannes took on a variety of roles in project management alongside his regular structural design tasks. He worked as a scheduler and later as a site engineer on two projects: improving the high-voltage power supply for an aluminum smelter and contributing to a geothermal power plant project in the Philippines. Prior to this, he was a project manager on domestic infrastructure projects, such as establishing and maintaining facilities for local communities in southern Iceland. Jóhannes also served as the planning and building representative for the official authorities of Skaftárhreppur for more than a year, following several years of work as a structural engineer at Mannvit.
Jóhannes was born in late 1973. He began his career at a young age as a fisherman before earning a journeyman certificate as a carpenter and later becoming a master carpenter. He subsequently pursued civil engineering studies in Denmark at Aalborg University, earning an M.Sc. in civil engineering in 2004 for his research in coastal engineering. Jóhannes is a highly adaptable individual with an intuitive ability to think outside the box and remain calm in challenging situations.
